Power industry project

As a developing country, Vietnam’s economy is constantly expanding its production facilities, and the electricity industry must also invest accordingly to meet the increasing demand. Therefore, the number of electricity projects across Vietnam is also constantly increasing.

Goals & Scope of Work

  • Transporting super-sized and super-heavy turbine blades (62 m), 135-ton turbine cluster (nacelle) and separate tower (total weight 2,100 tons)
  • Providing 8-axle tractors, hydraulic multi-axle trailers and crawler cranes for loading, unloading and assembling
  • Surveying the route of more than 600 km from Cam Ranh port to the foot of Chu Yang Sin mountain
  • Requesting special circulation permits, coordinating with local authorities

Key Challenges

New power industry projects combine construction and highly developed technology, diversifying many fields from oil and gas, hydropower, wind power, solar power, thermal power, waste-to-energy, transmission systems, transformer stations, etc. Each power industry construction and transportation project has its own specific challenges and opportunities to increase power conversion efficiency and investment efficiency, to reduce the total project cost right from the macro planning step and modular machinery design.

Reducing transportation time thereby saves construction and installation time, faster energization progress, and higher ROI investment profit.

Old infrastructure (roads, bridges, obstacles such as power lines, etc.), combined with changes in macro policies on energy development in Vietnam (draft power plan 8).

When transporting power projects, it is necessary to synchronize with the equipment supply chain from many different domestic and foreign production sources to the construction site, always complying with safety standards, traffic safety regulations and environmental laws.

In many power projects, oversized and overweight equipment such as turbines and generators are pre-installed with mechanical components inside. New energy technologies are often built in difficult-to-access places, so there are many unique challenges during transportation.

For example, in a recent mountain wind power project in the Central region, engineers had to transport 12 of the largest wind turbines in Vietnam, with blades measuring 76.293 meters long and a tower diameter of 5.534 meters, in just 1 month over a route of more than 227km from Hon La port to a transit site near the construction site, while still ensuring safety when passing through many winding slopes, long bridges, and winds near the construction site, before the rainy and stormy season arrives.

Solutions & Deployment

  • PPL strictly adheres to QHSE standards and has been certified with ISO 45001: 2018, ISO 14001: 2015 and ISO 9001: 2015 by UKAS.
  • Regular training to improve staff qualifications, increase safety awareness, and apply environmental protection standards. With a dedicated and experienced team, we comprehensively manage the transportation process from survey, planning to completion, across Vietnam and other countries in the Indochina region: Laos, Cambodia.
  • PPL's QHSE quality management system ensures that the transportation services we provide are stable and meet international quality standards. PPL's transportation solutions are not only feasible but also highly cost-effective, as they include risk assessment and tailor-made to suit the requirements and current status of each project.

Project cargo for power plant construction is often very large, contained in many containers, along with oversized and overweight separate equipment such as transformers, hubs, turbines. Most of the time, PPL receives goods, transported by ship from the manufacturing site abroad, at the port and transported to the construction site. On average, each project usually lasts one year due to many socio-economic, environmental factors and related government agencies. In some special cases, we can complete the transportation of wind power plants in a short time frame of 1 month, or with large thermal power plant projects, it can last up to 4 years. Most cases of power industry projects require the transportation of project cargo, oversized and overweight cargo.

Project Overview

Investor

Dak Lak Wind Power Joint Stock Company

Capacity

50 MW (14 turbines, 3.57 MW each turbine)

Location

Ea Sup District, Dak Lak Province

Time of execution

Ea Sup District, Dak Lak Province

Results & Effectiveness

  • Wind power transport
  • Load out oil and gas components
  • Hydropower: converts the kinetic and potential energy of water currents, waterfalls and tides into electricity. Hydraulic turbines convert the flow energy into mechanical energy. Generators convert the mechanical energy of turbines into electricity. The basic components in hydropower project transport are: hydroelectric turbines and generators.
  • Solar energy: When the sun shines on a solar panel, the energy from sunlight will be absorbed by the PV cells in the panel. This energy creates charges that move to react with the electric field inside the cell, causing an electric current. The main components of a solar farm are solar panels, power cables, inverters, battery packs, and charge controllers.
  • Thermal power plants: run on thermal energy from coal or natural gas, oil, or even waste (garbage electricity). The furnace heats the steam, creating kinetic energy to rotate the turbine, transmitting it to the generator to produce electricity.
  • Transformer transportation: Transformers with high rated capacity and voltage above 123 kV are usually transported without oil (tanks filled with nitrogen or dry air) and without bushings, storage equipment and cooling equipment. Transformers are installed in substations to change the voltage of the high voltage current (when transmitted from the power plant) to normal voltage when reaching the consumer.
