Scotland goes into operation the largest offshore wind farm
According to the announcement on August 23, 2022 by French oil giant TotalEnergies and renewable energy company SSE Rewables, Seagreen farm - Scotland's largest farm has come into operation.
The farm has a total of 114 turbines. On the morning of August 22, 2022, the first wind turbine was put into operation about 27 km from the coast of Angus county.
According to the two partners, the wind farm has a total capacity of 1,075 MW, capable of supplying electricity to 1.6 million households. The farm is expected to be fully operational in the first half of 2023.
The $4.3 billion Seagreen project will be the largest offshore wind farm project in Scotland. At the same time, Seagreen will be the deepest wind power project in the world, with a depth of 59 meters above sea level.

Paul Cooley, Offshore Project Manager at SSE Renewables commented: “Once completed, Seagreen will make a significant contribution to Scotland and the UK’s ambitious renewable energy plans.”
He added: “To see the turbine spin in the North Sea and safely start generating electricity is a great achievement for everyone involved in the project. Seagreen will benefit the local community and contribute to the UK supply chain.”
For TotalEnergies, this is the first offshore wind farm project to come into operation in Europe (the world's first wind farm project to go into operation is the Yulin project in Taiwan).
In June 2022, the French oil and gas group reached an agreement with SSE Renewables to buy a 51% stake in the Seagreen project.
According to Vincent Stoquart, Head of Renewable Energy at TotalEnergies: “We are delighted that the Seagreen project, the first in the UK's North Sea, has commenced operations. This will be a new step in the development of TotalEnergies offshore wind power.” It is known that the French giant sets a target of 35 GW of renewable electricity capacity by 2025.
